One of the most popular musical awards in America, American Music Awards is a great platform for the talented singers to make a mark in the music fraternity of the nation. Some of the other popular musical award shows in America are the Grammy Awards, the Billboard Music awards and the Rock and Roll hall of Fame Induction Ceremony. The credit of creating American Music Awards goes to Dick Clark in the year 1973, which is now counted as one of the three big music awards given in America.

The award ceremony was launched to compete with the then popular Grammys and also made way for the musical talents of the nation to get themselves prepared. It was with Rodney Allen Rippy and Ricky Segall that Donny Osmond and Michael Jackson co-hosted the first ever award ceremony of the American Music Awards. The process of selection of the two events Grammy and AMAs is entirely different from each other. It is the votes of the people of the entertainment industry that decides the Grammys while a music buyer’s poll enjoys the selection power in the American Music Awards. AMAs, Grammys and Billboard Music Awards generally compete with each other’s in matters related to ratings of the television and prestige. Although AMAs and Billboard Music Awards is considered to be extremely popular among the music lovers but the Grammys is best known for its quality. The major tabloids remain busy with the gossips and controversies available from the competition that exists between the various award shows. The materials available from the tabloids are also extremely popular among some section of the society who takes it as a favorite pastime. The main difference between the AMAs and the other award shows is that the former doesn’t have a prize for the Best Single or Record, which the later two have. In the year 1996 AMAs started a new award section but due to some reason the practice was discontinued as the winner of the section left the award on the show itself.
Although American Music Awards is an America based award show but has also rewarded renowned British singers like George Michael and Elton John for their significant contribution in the field of music. For a decade AMAs followed the tradition of employing multiple hosts for every special category but recently the organizers have decided to remain stick to only one host for the entire function. The popular country music band Alabama has won twenty-two awards from the American Music Awards Show. Whitney Houston has also collected twenty-three awards as a solo artist. The credit of receiving most AMAs award in one year goes to Michael Jackson and Whitney Houston. Olivia Newton-John, Michael Bolton, Barry Manilow, Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Luther vandross and Celine Dion are some of the other popular artists who have won American Music Awards.
