European Film Awards

The European Film Awards are the most celebrated pan European movie awards. Since 1988 the European Film Academy hosts the European Film Awards. The various activities of the European Film Academy culminate in the European Film Awards. Every second year the European Film Awards takes place in Berlin while the other cities of Europe get to host the award ceremony in between.

After being hosted in places like London, Paris, Rome and Barcelona, it is in 2006 that the European Film Awards was hosted in the East European City of Warsaw for the first time.

On December 1 2007 the 20th European Film Awards will be presented by the joint collaboration of European Film Academy and EFA Productions gGmbH in Berlin. The European Film Awards is popularly called the “European Oscars.” The European Film Awards are restricted to only European cinema and European producers and actors.

Since its inception in 1988 the European Film Awards had been very popular. But suddenly in mid-90s it saw a decreasing trend in its popularity and prestige. But the beginning of the 21st century saw a marked rise in its importance. Originally the award was called the Felix award but the name got changed to European Film Awards.

The European Film Awards are given in over ten categories of which the most important is the Film of the year. Other categories include

  • European Film Academy Lifetime Achievement Award

  • People’s Choice Award for best European Film
To be eligible for the European Film Awards the feature films must be European feature-length fiction films made for normal theatrical release and which have had their first official screening after July 1, 2006. At least 40 films are chosen to be considered for nominations. Short films should not be more than 15 minutes in length and the winner is chosen by the members of EFA by postal ballot vote. Based on the nominations, the members of European Film Academy vote for the winners. The winners are officially announced in the ceremony. In case of documentary films at least 8 candidates are nominated. The winner is decided after the documentary is screened in front of a three-member documentary jury. The winner in this category is usually announced in October.
